含硼聚乙烯是指加硼处理的聚乙烯。纯聚乙烯是硬质、半透明白色蜡状物质，软化温度115°C，易加工成所需形状。密0.92g/cm3，单位体积含氢原子数7.8～8.0×1022个/cm3，含氢量比水多，慢化中子能力比水强，是极有效的中子屏蔽材料。为降低聚乙烯中碳和氢俘获热中子后放出二次γ辐射的强度，需加硼处理。通常加入325目的硼酐(B2O3)粉末，但因其有吸水性，制片时能形成泡沫状蒸气，现已用碳化硼(B4C)代替。含8%(重量)天然B4C的聚乙烯可使俘获的γ射线强度减少100倍。含硼聚乙烯需着色，以区别未含硼聚乙烯。因其软化温度低，不宜在反应堆受热部位作中子屏蔽材料用。

含硼聚乙烯，射线防护板防辐射超高分子量聚乙烯含硼板性能：对x、y辐射线、同位素实验室等墙面抹灰对（散射线、漏射线、反弹射线）具有很强的吸收合衰减的作用，价格低廉，使用方便。普遍用于辐射场所的墙面和楼地板的防护使用。安全无害，具有稳定防护性能，坚实可靠，不易受损破裂。很好的防潮，抗冲击，零吸水率，性能稳定，抗老化性好，地面、地下埋没均可，50年不老化。按ASTM方法测定（负荷4.6㎏/cm2），热变形温度为85℃，使用温度可达90℃，特殊情况下，允许在更高的温度下使用

The results show that the shielding efficiency of the boron containing polyethylene plate is higher than that of the non boron containing polyethylene plate at the same thickness. When the thickness of boron containing polyethylene plate is more than 20cm, the shielding efficiency of the two kinds of neutron sources tends to be the same gradually, because the attenuation of neutron radiation in the material follows the exponential attenuation law. The results show that the shielding efficiency of the boron containing polyethylene sheet for 241Am be neutron source is in the range of 47.7% - 97.7% and for 252Cf neutron source is in the range of 60% - 98.2% with the thickness of 3.2-22.4cm. Generally, 5% boron containing polyethylene plate with thickness of 10-20cm is selected to shield fast neutrons, which can achieve satisfactory protection effect.
