它是中国工程物理研究院开发的一类新型硬质屏蔽材料，已用于科研、核工程建设及医疗卫生部门的中子及γ射线防护。

含硼聚乙烯具有良好的工程性能、尺寸稳定性好，隔离热中子、快中子性能明显优于聚乙烯，宁津县鸿宝化工生产的防中子含硼聚乙烯板生产工艺稳定，加工性能良好，完全适合工程应用。该材料在中子的作用下产生γ射线。相对于隔离中子而言，γ射线是二级剂量。 而在含硼聚乙烯球中，主要是硼起吸收作用。硼对低能中子的反应截面比较大，在还没有发生氢的反应之前低能中子基本已被硼完全吸收，含硼聚乙烯在质量百分比为10﹪、厚度为15cm时，含硼聚乙烯对中子的隔离效果已达到要求。在此基础上再增加含硼量或者厚度，中子的积分泄露量基本不发生变化。
